Salt-softened water not only tastes bad, it can be harmful to your health and it can be harmful to your plumbing. If you have heart or kidney disease, or if you are on a sodium restricted diet, or even if you are perfectly healthy, a no salt water softener may be just what you need. In the water softening (salt) process, calcium bicarbonate, which is a naturally occurring chemical compound in “Hard” water, is exchanged for sodium (salt), which ends up in your bath, shower and drinking water.

Your water sodium content can increase to as much as 100 milligrams per litre (that’s about a quart) after softening with salt. According to a report in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, that’s why a no salt water softener is so important.
The American Heart Association states, “people on salt restricted diets should avoid home softeners or make sure the ones they install do not use sodium.” Also studies show that salt-softened water, dissolves lead from solder in plumbing. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Institute of Technology, this means that when you are bathing in salt-softened water, there may be absorption of toxic lead (along with the sodium) into your body.
Peter Censky stated, before retiring as the Executive Director of the Water Quality Association, “Now I’m going to make some predictions about the water industry…actually, most don’t even qualify as predictions – they are already happening. Clock-timer water softeners for household use will cease to be sold. The ecology movement will drive them out of both, water poor states, and water rich states.”
The solution for your health, the environment and your plumbing is a no salt water softener!
